Consumer stock reaches German auctions almost entirely through insolvency and clearance rather than through the returns trade. When a retailer, wholesaler or hospitality business fails, the administrator hands the remaining inventory to an auctioneer, who sells it in bulk lots described rather than inspected. The buyers are traders and market sellers as often as end users. Two German specifics matter: several platforms admit businesses only, under the consumer definition in § 13 BGB, and the margin scheme applies to a good deal of second-hand stock, which means no reclaimable VAT on the invoice.
