Auctions in Germany

Germany runs the deepest and most fragmented auction market in Europe, and it is the single most useful country to understand if you buy at auction anywhere on the continent. The public sector alone operates several separate channels: VEBEG for federal surplus, Zoll-Auktion for goods seized by customs, and Justiz-Auktion for judicial sales — each with its own registration process and its own rhythm of listings. Alongside them sit the large commercial platforms handling insolvency estates, industrial liquidations and fleet disposals, plus a layer of regional auction houses that never advertise outside their own state.

For vehicles, Germany is where most of Europe's used stock originates. Ex-lease and ex-fleet cars come off contract in volume, and the dealer-only wholesale platforms move them across borders as a matter of course — a significant share of used cars sold in Poland, the Czech Republic and the Baltics passes through a German auction first. Damaged and salvage vehicles have their own dedicated platforms, distinct from the wholesale marketplaces.

Two practical points. First, most German B2B auction platforms require a trade registration (Gewerbeanmeldung) or a VAT number before you can bid, and verification can take several working days — register before you find a lot you want, not after. Second, pay attention to the VAT treatment stated on each lot: differenzbesteuert (margin scheme) and regelbesteuert (standard rate) lots have very different economics for a buyer who intends to export or reclaim.
