Auctions in Belgium

Belgium punches far above its size in the European auction market, largely because of geography. The country sits between the German industrial belt, the Dutch logistics corridor and the French market, and the port of Antwerp gives it a constant flow of goods that need liquidating — seized shipments, abandoned cargo, surplus equipment and end-of-lease fleets from companies operating across all three neighbouring markets.

The Belgian auction scene splits fairly cleanly. Antwerp and the Flemish region concentrate industrial, automotive and cargo auctions, with several houses specialising in heavy rolling stock and machinery from bankrupt contractors. Wallonia and Brussels lean more towards general auctions, estate clearances and antiques. Bilingual listings (Dutch and French) are normal, though the working language of a given auction house usually follows its region.

Belgian auctions are worth watching even if you are based elsewhere: the country's compact size means collection is straightforward, and many houses are used to cross-border buyers arriving from the Netherlands, Germany and northern France. Check the buyer's premium before bidding — Belgian houses vary more than their Dutch and German counterparts, and a headline price can move considerably once the premium and VAT are added.
