Italy runs the bulk of its auction volume through the courts, and the system is unusually centralised for a country of its size. Judicial sales — property, vehicles, company assets seized in enforcement or insolvency proceedings — are published through a national portal operated under the Ministry of Justice, with individual sales handled by court-appointed delegates and licensed auction houses across the regions.

Property dominates by value. Apartments, houses, workshops and agricultural land come to auction after mortgage default or business failure, and the discounts against market price can be substantial because sales run on a court timetable rather than a seller's. Alongside the judicial channel sits a commercial layer: industrial auctioneers liquidating factory contents, machine shops and catering fit-outs, particularly in the manufacturing belt of Lombardy, Veneto and Emilia-Romagna.

Three things to settle before bidding. Italian judicial sales usually require a deposit (cauzione) lodged before the auction and forfeited if you win and fail to complete. Property lots often come with occupancy or eviction complications that the notice describes only briefly — read the perizia, the court-appointed expert's report, in full. And the buyer typically pays registration and transfer taxes on top of the hammer price, which on property is not a rounding error.
