The UK auction market is one of the deepest in Europe and, since it sits outside the EU customs union, one of the most self-contained. Insolvency and liquidation drive a large share of the commercial volume: when a British company fails, its plant, vehicles, stock and office contents typically go through an online auction within weeks, and the larger houses run several such sales concurrently.

The categories with the most consistent supply are industrial machinery and workshop equipment, commercial vehicles and plant, and retail stock and customer returns sold by the pallet. There is also a well-established classic and enthusiast vehicle market with its own specialist auctioneers and a strong international following.

For buyers on the continent, the main change since Brexit is administrative rather than practical: buying from the UK into the EU is an import, with customs declarations, duty and import VAT at the destination. Auction houses are used to this and many will arrange export documentation, but it needs to be agreed before the sale, not after. Buyer's premiums in the UK are typically quoted separately from VAT, so read the fee schedule before you calculate a maximum bid.
