The French auction market is structured differently from its northern neighbours, and the difference matters when you bid. Public auctions in France have historically been the preserve of licensed auctioneers (commissaires-priseurs) operating under a regulated framework, which shapes everything from how catalogues are published to how buyer's premiums are set and disclosed.

Live auctions with simultaneous online bidding remain far more common in France than in the Netherlands or Germany, where timed online-only sales dominate. Practically, this means lots can move quickly and you may be bidding in real time against a room. Regional auction houses across the country handle everything from industrial equipment and vehicles to art, furniture and wine, and many now stream their sales.

Two things to check before bidding: the buyer's premium, which is generally higher in France than in Germany or Belgium and is quoted separately from VAT, and the collection arrangements, which are often organised around a narrow window immediately after the sale.
