The Württembergisches Auktionshaus für Postwertzeichen has been holding its own auctions in Stuttgart since 1986 and is one of the established German addresses for philately. Unusually for a stamp house it also runs coins, so a single consignment of a mixed estate does not have to be split between two auctioneers.
What you can buy
- Stamps — single rarities and complete collections.
- Coins.
- Collectors' items more generally.
How the bidding works
Sales are announced with catalogues and a highlights section for the significant lots. The house works with three groups explicitly — collectors, dealers and heirs — and offers free valuation and personal advice to consignors, which is aimed squarely at the third of those.
What to check before you bid
Mixed philatelic and numismatic sales reward reading the catalogue carefully: a stamp lot and a coin lot in the same auction can carry different expertise behind the description. For anything significant, ask what certification exists. The site is in German.
