Huutokaupat.com

Huutokaupat.com is a Finnish online auction marketplace run from Helsinki by Mezzoforte Oy (business ID 2004568-7), which reports over five million visits a month. Only vetted companies and public-sector bodies may list, with private individuals admitted for vehicles; stock also comes from insolvency administrators and public bodies: the Enforcement Authority (Ulosottolaitos), the Defence Forces, forestry agency Metsahallitus and finance companies repossessing collateral. A typical day shows roughly 5,200 open lots, several hundred from bankruptcy estates and around two hundred from bailiff seizures.
What you can buy
- Cars and vans: Volkswagen, Toyota, Volvo, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Skoda saloons and estates, plus vans, trailers, motorcycles and caravans, many repossessed by finance companies or sold out of bankruptcy estates.
- Heavy machinery: excavators, wheel loaders, forklifts, tractors and forestry equipment, frequently from insolvent contractors; this is the category the operator actively markets to foreign buyers.
- Property: apartments, summer cottages, commercial premises, forest parcels and building plots, including enforcement sales.
- Tools and building supplies: power tools, tool sets, timber, fixtures and site equipment.
- Electronics, home and leisure: computers, cameras, audio, furniture, garden machinery and sports gear.
- Bulk lots and collectibles: wholesale pallets, coins, militaria, Defence Forces surplus.
How the bidding works
Accounts are free. Finnish residents register as a private person or a company and must then identify themselves with Finnish online banking credentials before they can bid. Lots run as timed online auctions that extend a few minutes after each late bid, with a separate section carrying notices for traditional auction events, including enforcement sales by written tender. Bids are binding until a higher one is accepted, and the seller has two working days after close to accept or reject the top bid, after which it lapses. Payment is then due within one working day, and the lot is released only once payment is confirmed. Most lots are collected by the buyer; some offer parcel delivery, and a partner courier service quotes fixed-price transport in advance. Buyers outside Finland cannot use the standard account: EU-registered companies with a valid VAT number apply separately for an international buyer account, pass a know-your-customer check, and may then bid on pickup-term lots, with selected machinery flagged for international sale.
What to check before you bid
The site is in Finnish; machine translation covers some pages, and the operator says the Finnish original prevails in any conflict. VAT is shown per lot and the treatment varies: added, included, or neither deductible nor added on many estate and authority sales. Sellers pay listing fees of 29 to 99 EUR plus commission of 1.9 to 5.9 percent, which feeds into reserve levels, and on lots where Huutokaupat.com is a party to the sale the buyer also pays a published handling fee, roughly 46 to 199 EUR on vehicles and 75 to 249 EUR on heavy equipment, on top of any per-lot pickup charge. Payment is built for Finland: online banking at nine Finnish banks, credit and instalment products needing Finnish bank identification, or plain transfer, which takes about four working days to clear before release. Approved foreign companies pay by transfer with VAT charged up front, refunded only after export paperwork reaches customer service within ten days of collection; they buy Ex Works and must collect vehicle registration documents in person from a Finnish inspection station, paying that station's fee. Outside consumer purchases handled directly by Huutokaupat.com, goods are sold as-is with no warranty, exchange or return. Viewings depend on the individual seller, and collection addresses are scattered across Finland, so budget for inspection travel and haulage.
